Personal Statement
My name is Siddiq. I'm serving a 25-year to life sentence for the crime of murder in the second degree. In no way do I seek to skirt responsibility, reduce the seriousness of the crime, or ignore the detrimental impact of my past actions. There are no words to express the profundity of remorse, pain, guilt and true embarrassment felt within.
So while what you are about to read may appear to be things that have been of benefit to Saddiq, the reality is, it is my way of making amends to the creator, to my uncle's memory, to my family, the community and myself.
Incarceration History
EDUCATIONAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Masters in Professional Studies (MPS)
New York Theological Seminary
Class of 1995
Within the first seven years of my imprisonment I had voluntarily participated in every Violent Behavior Awareness and Substance Abuse Awareness program that the State had to offer. Programs, many of which I continue to be involved with on some level to this very day. Within the first nine years of my incarceration I had earned numerous college degrees. In 1991, I earned an Associates degree from Dutchess Community College, in 1994, a Bachelors degree in Psychology and Social Work from Marist College, and in 1995, I also earned a Masters degree from the New York Theological Seminary, and was soon thereafter appointed as an Adjunct Professor. Director and Instructor of the NYTS Certificate in Human Services and Ministry program, for which I have written the proposal, networked with Marist College faculty and developed at the Green Haven Correctional Facility. Today, this program functions in nine prisons across the State.
I've participated in countless individual and group therapeutic sessions and programs which enhanced my spiritual development and personal transformation. In addition to the above, I have been issued some 90 different certificates, community service award acknowledgements and commendations. This along with numerous letters of character reference and support for my release from family, friends, educators, professionals and Department of Correctional Services staff. Over the past 18 years, I have been blessed to established a sound track record of positive transformation and community preparedness.
Release Plans
As a loving an devoted husband, father and grandfather, I intend on living with my wife and children upon my release. My academic credentials and experience as a counselor and program developer has allowed me to become a marketable asset in the fields of criminal justice and transitional services. Though I am still years away from parole consideration, I continue to develop my skills and do that which is necessary to make myself community and employment ready.
In Closing ....
I realize that I cannot revisit my past, nor can I change what happened. Today, I draw strength from my wife and children, as well as, my past in hopes of making better life decisions. I truly do remain remorseful and deeply regret having caused this death.
