Personal Statement
Prior to my incarceration, I graduated salutatorian from high school, and then worked in various fields (from McDonald's to corporate America). Yet, despite all my versatility and potential, I was unable to overcome my violent nature and committed one horrid act that changed the lives of many people.
In a drunken haze, I killed my friend, David Terrizzi, and forever robbed his family of the joy that his life would bring. I turned myself in to the police the next day, so I could accept responsibility for my actions. I've never denied this heinous act, nor have I ever ceased to express my sympathy and remorse to David's family. I am serving twenty years to life for my crime, but I will always bear the burden of guilt for killing a friend.

Volunteer Programs
When I entered prison, I knew I needed to work on my internal issues, so I looked within to identify my demons. The best way to break the cycle of violence is to douse its fire with love for others (agape) and promote peace. Therefore, I became involved with the Alternatives to Violence Project, began tutoring others in school, and eventually embraced Islam. I also enrolled in programs that allowed me to hone my interpersonal, managerial, clerical and vocational skills. My involvement in programs (such as the Alternatives to Violence Project, Youth Awareness Program, Rehabilitation Through the Arts, Prisoners for AIDS Counseling and Education and Family Works) has contributed to my overall transformation, and will make make me an invaluable asset upon my release.
Release Plans
Everything that I have done while incarcerated has been directed toward my release plan. My life's mission is mentoring the youth, so I'll work with Uth Turn initially. I also want to become a certified computer technician. Eventually, I'd like to start a mentoring NPO (or expand Uth Turn to other areas) and work privately as a computer consultant. In my 'free time,' I'll continue writing, acting and performing.
In Closing ....
Oprah Winfrey once quoted an unknown source that said, "True freedom is liberating someone else by telling your story." Although I have made my prison time count, I can never erase my past. I'm truly sorry for the pain and loss I've caused to those who have been affected by my actions. I know my words may seem hollow, but your suffering has not been for naught. I am a better person because of it, and I intend to touch the lives of millions by telling my story.
Sincerely,
Kelly Watts
